The History Of MidState Federal Credit Union
MidState Federal Credit Union began over half a century ago on May 3, 1950, with a total membership of seven. These original seven members decided to pool their savings in order to promote thrift among them, by affording them an opportunity to accumulate their savings and create a source of credit they could borrow from for provident and productive purposes. After over fifty years of service, MidState FCU still follows these same beliefs today.

At the time of its founding, the credit union's name was USMR Employees Federal Credit Union. Its field of membership was limited to employees of United States Metals Refining Company in Carteret, New Jersey; employees of the credit union; members of their immediate families; and organizations of such persons. When the credit union's sponsor company (USMR) became AMAX, Inc. in 1984, the downsizing of this
facility began. It was at this point that the U.S. Metals Refinery Federal Credit Union became MidState Federal Credit Union. The downsizing caused the credit union to abandon its sponsor-provided office facilities and relocate to Roosevelt Avenue, Carteret, NJ, its current location.

In 2000, the National Credit Union Administration approved MidState FCU to become a community charter credit union. Today, MidState FCU has grown into a credit union with a membership of 1600 and assets exceeding $19 million. MidState FCU is a full-service financial institution that provides service to persons who live, work, worship, attend school, own a business or other legal entities in the Borough of Carteret, New Jersey.
